About MIASA

The Mining Industry Associations of Southern Africa (MIASA) is an association of national mining employer organizations based in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) member states. The association was established in 1998 to create a forum for information sharing, formulating common policies on issues of mutual interest, and acting as the official interface between the mining industry in the region and the SADC Committee of Mining Ministers.
The membership of MIASA is comprised of the Botswana Chamber of Mines; The Chamber of Mines of Namibia; The Chamber of Mines of South Africa; The Chamber of Mines of Tanzania; The Chamber of Mines of Zambia and the Chamber of Mines of Zimbabwe.
The role played by MIASA in the private sector mining community in the region mirrors the role played by SADC Mining Sector. This has made it inevitable that MIASA should work closely with the Mining Coordinator in the SADC Secretariat. This relationship has resulted in MIASA being accorded observer status at meetings of the SADC Committee of Mining Ministers. This position ensures that MIASA has access to intergovernmental regional policy discussions on mining and is accorded an audience on issues pertaining to private sector mining. This provides a platform for government / private sector interface and enables consultations in the formulation of uniform mining policies within the region.
While members are continually in contact with each other and share information, MIASA members meet officially twice a year. One meeting is held in South Africa and the other one is hosted by one of the members on a rotational basis within the SADAC region. These meetings provide a forum for information exchange and policy formulation on issues of mutual interest.
As a member of the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM), MIASA plays an active role in international mining issues and policy debates on a global basis.
